Alessia Cara - Here

Music chameleon and self-confessed introvert Alessia Cara is set to make waves this year. At only nineteen Cara has been signed to iconic record label Def Jam and has released her debut single ‘Here’, a quiet but powerful anthem for the voiceless. Hailing from Toronto, Canada the R&B songstress is a wallflower who seeks to highlight the corruption of the music industry, through well thought out lyrics.

Debut single ‘Here’ showcases the Canadian singer-songwriter’s silky vocals layered over a deft, warped Isaac Hayes sample. An introvert’s party anthem, Alessia narrates the battle between the extroverts who run the superstructure and the introverts who are trampled in the process.  The introverted are slaves to the social system and she strives to change that, by making a quiet protest. The passionate riffs shows that Alessia is ‘indifferent’ to those ‘who don’t care about [her] wellbeing’, that her status as an outsider can only make her stronger rather than weaker in the music industry.

A hybrid clash between elegant lounge soul and smooth R&B, the luxurious control of the vocals is supreme and establishes Alessia’s role as introverted maestro. Like Amy Winehouse Alessia’s lyrics are personal, an autobiographical account of issues that are related both to the music industry and her own individual perception of herself as a person. Citing Amy Winehouse as the inspiration behind her music career, ‘Here’ juxtaposes the bluesy intonation of ‘Rehab’ with modern sass and soul. The future-soul esque vibe, uses repetition to solidify Alessia’s role as Queen of the Introverts; with repetitive coos of ‘oh-oh-oh here’, Alessia shows that she is a powerhouse not worth messing with.

Behind every iconic song is an inspirational message and ‘Here’ is no exception. Alessia urges ‘[her] people’ –the painfully shy- to step forward and make a change. No longer are the meek weak instead they will unite to challenge the social norm and break free from societal constraints, in an industry that is defined by superficiality. The united army is a rebellion against ideals and behaviours that are typically associated with the party girl lifestyle and Alessia is ‘not interested’ in adhering to the expected ‘celebrity’ norm.  Like many modern pop jams Alessia borrows hooks and samples beats that are layered over sing-song nursery narration to give a niche soul-esque flavour.
