Would you pay $900 (that’s around £545) for a small slice of luxury that will be gone in a matter of seconds? I personally struggle to consume anything that looks too good to eat, never mind what is thought to be the world’s most expensive cupcake.

Beating the previous record holder, the $750 ‘Decadence D’Or Cupcake’ in Las Vegas, this extravagant delicacy was created by Toronto’s Le Dolci bakery exclusively for one woman’s 40th birthday. A customer approached the Canadian bakery “requesting a crazy cupcake” according to the pastry stores owner, Lisa Sanguedolce, at the Toronto Sun. He sought to celebrate the symbolic turning point in his wife’s life in the most unique way possible, believing that he could find the way to his wife’s heart through her sweet-tooth. His aim was to combine all of her favourite flavours and craft one ultra-limited edition gourmet delight. Well that is certainly what he did.

“The details were numerous — and expensive” – Lisa Sanguedolce

To ensure the customer got his money’s worth, no expense was spared. Expensive indulgent ingredients were used from all over the world. The pricey Amedei chocolate came from Tuscany (Italy) and is said to deliver succulent ‘undertones of honey, caramel, lavender, vanilla, banana and orange blossom’ that can’t help but make your mouth water. Other exotic ingredients also include Tahitian Vanilla beans and Hawaiian Kona Coffee (one of the most expensive coffees in the world).

Sitting in a handmade chocolate cup, eloquence radiates from this dessert with beautiful drops of edible sugar diamonds and sprinkles of 24-carot gold leaves glistening across the surface. The gleaming gold-painted branches surrounded by fondant flowers finish off the ornate floral theme, making it irresistibly tantalizing for your taste buds. “It also features a pipette filled with limited edition Courvoisier that is drizzled atop the cupcake before consumption”.

One of the most extraordinary features of the grand miniature cupcake is its pastry cream, achieved using luxurious Krug Brut Champagne and Rosewood Estate Honey. Tiny bubbles from the champagne were sprinkled over the cake by using a molecular gastronomy technique that Sanguedolce told the National Post makes them “explode in your mouth”.

Although Le Dolci are accustomed to designing creative high quality cakes, they have never made anything quite as elaborate and lavish as this. Their daily cupcake costs just $2.75, quite far from this special $900 one, but Sanguedolce told the National Post that it “turned out to be a really fun project”.

The customer is understood to have been extremely delighted with her birthday present – “when his wife saw it, she shrieked” and “said it was delicious”. So, if you are a passionate cupcake fanatic, would you rather devour 327 of Le Dolci’s regular cupcakes or dip your toes in luxury and experience what could be the most exquisite tasting cupcake yet?

Fancy creating your own miniature masterpiece? Then here is the complete list of ingredients:

  • Kona Blue Mountain Coffee (in the chocolate buttercream)

  • Sea salt (from Camargue, France)

  • Valrhona cocoa powder
